English language learners need to make real world connections to sight words to understand the meaning of new words. This is essential for learning foundational reading skills. Older students often feel embarrassed to have their peers see them looking at beginning leveled readers, so they don't want to use them. Looking at nonfiction texts makes them feel more comfortable with their peers. Exposure to multiple nonfiction texts also increases English language skills. Upper elementary beginning English language learners build confidence when they use nonfiction readers so they don't feel like they're using childish books.
