When new and aspiring musicians pick up their instruments for the first time, we focus on helping them make a sound. As they progress in learning the notes and rhythms, a clear strong sound remains our priority. If the sound is not right, then nothing else matters. Once the sound is consistent and note reading and rhythms come along, we move from individual sounds to ensemble sounds, matching sounds between players and between different sections in the band. Tuners are the difference between individuals making sound and ensembles making music. The more tools we have to help them learn to listen and match, the more success and growth they will have as musicians. These tuners will be used as an in-class set to benefit a band program of 350 musicians on a daily basis. The contact mics that come with each metronome/tuner set allow the tuners to pick up the sound of individual instruments so that students can make adjustments to achieve unity with their peers. As they practice each day using these tuners their ears will learn to hear what an ensemble sounds like in tune and apply those adjustments from the warm-ups into the music.
