Every year my class is assigned a cultural project between the months of September and November. My students learn and explore about the cultural holiday of Dia de los Muertos/Day of the dead by researching the purpose of the holiday, how it began, and sharing stories of loved ones that have a passed on and how they'd like to remember them. Every year my students are given 2-3 weeks to work on a project which has them creating one of the following, a Dia de los Muertos portrait, a sugar skull sculpture, or, build a shadow box dedicated to a loved one that has passed on, or, dedicated to someone of importance in history. My students love when this project comes around! They get to explore different ideas, it encourages them to share and gain feedback from their peers about their projects, and we hold a little showcase to show their families and the school their finished projects.
