The materials requested will be used to build and establish a school garden. First, we will set up the compost bin and begin creating our own nutrient-rich soil. This will be done by collecting the various organic materials produced at school during the day and placing them in the bin. Furthermore, students will build and set up the raised garden beds at school. Each class will start their seeds inside the greenhouses and then later transplant them to the raised beds when they are ready. The irrigation system will also be designed and built by the students using their knowledge of measurements, forces, and motion. Students will be able to observe how forces affect plant growth and how roots prevent soil erosion. Once the plants are placed in the raised beds, students will collect data on a weekly basis to record plant growth and observe how sexual reproduction occurs in fruiting plants. Students will also observe the role of ecological succession that will be occurring in our garden while left unattended (summer). Finally, various soil testing kits and probes will be used to collect information to create graphs to show our data. The fruits, vegetables, and herbs grown will be donated to lower-income student households. All in all, the donations for this project will allow my students to fully develop science process skills through real-life, hands-on experiences. This project will inspire and motivate my students to become real-world critical thinkers and problem solvers.
