The majority of our R. C. Centeno students will hopefully be returned to campus August of 2021, after a year and a half of virtual learning. The students are always commenting on how badly they want to return to campus to create projects and work with their peers. Many of our students eagerly share descriptions and show off their Lego toy creations and assorted inventions, while other students cut and paste paper, toilet paper rolls, twigs, paper clips, pen caps and anything else they find lying around the house. It is apparent they miss the structure and plethora of materials available to them in school. The majority of our population do not have the means to purchase materials for home use. These Stem kits and maker space projects will give our students the tools they need to release bottled up energy, creativity and unharness their vivid imagination. These materials will help students enhance their problems solving skills, motivate creativity and utilize their critical thinking skills. Virtual learning has kept our students from utilizing their gross motor skills in various ways. These Stem Kits and Maker Space activities will provide students with opportunities to use gross and fine motor dexterity. The building kits are also a means to engage students in social-emotional interactions as they engage in communicating, collaborating, leading and following the direction and ideas their peers. Once the students begin to communicate with their peers around a common goal it has the potential to help them be better communicators with their family. I can only image how frustrating it has been for our young learners to be learning from a screen, having to be muted most of the day and only being able to speak from time to time. Their social engagement abilities have been drastically altered.
