It is heartbreaking when a student asks me for a book in their native language and I have nothing to give them. There are very few foreign language books in our school library or the public library in town. As a school system we are seeing more and more immigrant families moving in and I would like to provide these amazing students with some books that they can read.
With the purchase of these materials I will be able to begin a foreign language library within my classroom and connect students to what we are learning in class. Students will be able to borrow novels from my class to independently read. They are expected to read independently in their 6th, 7th, and 8th grade English classes and can use these native language books for the assignments they will be given.
In our English as a New Language class we always do a novel study. Next year we are going to read the book The One and Only Ivan. English learners will practice reading in English, but will have the book in Spanish to support their learning and understanding.
