My classroom library will be starting from ground zero next year. Many of the students who enter my classroom next year are struggling readers. In order to support their fluency and comprehension skills, I want to build a classroom library full of a variety of books for independent reading, as well as to reinforce a skill or concept. Next year, I will have very few books to support my 6th and 7th grade students’ academic, social, and emotional needs. In addition to supporting specific reading techniques, books are also excellent tools to create positive discussions about important life skills and character traits.
