These days, students are often using their cell phones to do everything. This includes doing math - if they need a calculator, they often pull out their cell phones to do the calculations. However, using a phone on an assessment is not an option (creates temptation to do other things!) and calculators can be very pricey. Even access to a scientific calculator can be difficult. Though it's fine for my students to use their phones when at home, I want them to have access to the calculators in class. It will help them to focus on content, rather than on their multiplication tables that might not come quickly for them. Learning how to use the graphing calculators is useful, also, in that they will not always have desmos handy. Ideally I would have a class set of each (at least 30) BUT, even having a few of each helps out so I do not have to search for ones to borrow from other teachers or see if the school sets are not in use during the time I need them.
