Ukuleles, bucket drums, keyboards--oh, my! I love to give my students a variety of musical experiences that they may not get to have otherwise. Ukuleles have unique tuning that makes chords easy to learn and therefore they can start playing songs quickly. The instruments’ small size also makes them accessible to young players. Bucket drums show that you can make music with ANYTHING. All you need is a couple of sturdy sticks, a good rhythm, and some imagination. Keyboards are something most students would never own, much less a piano. We have keyboards for class but can you imagine what it sounds like when twenty students are practicing at the same time? I quickly realized that headphones were a must! Everyone knows that participating is much more powerful than just observing and I want ALL of my students to be able to jump in and get involved with hands-on music making. We have the beginnings of an amazing music program--we just need a few more items to make it complete! I have 17 ukuleles (from a previous “Donors Choose” fundraiser--thank you!!) but we average 18-23 students per class. I have 17 buckets and some battered sticks. A few more buckets and a bunch of actual drumsticks would make a world of difference. I have enough keyboards but not enough headphones. We are so close to including everyone! Music can bring out the creativity in a student, broaden their listening horizons, let them “try on” new vocal and instrumental styles, and give them special bonding moments with their fellow classmates. But, if you’ve read this far, you probably already know these things from personal experience. Thanks, in advance, for helping my students completely engage in music next school year!
