Due to the COVID school closures and having many students without access to books at home, teachers are seeing significantly lower reading abilities this year. In some grade levels over seventy-five percent of students are reading below grade level. Many reading interventions are being provided to students, but one piece we are still missing is engaging phonetic text for students to read independently. This project will help struggling readers feel proud and inspired to read a chapter book like their peers! Many of the books I am hoping to put in student's hands are chapter books that are at much lower reading levels than usual chapter books. With adding more decodable (phonics patterned) books at low levels in each classroom, it will help kids practice and reinforce the skills being taught, while also building their confidence.
