The LEGO project combines the motivation of earned or choice breaks with supporting fine motor skills in students’ areas of interest. LEGOs are a wonderful tool for increasing fine motor skills; a necessary skill to support the foundation of and stamina for writing. Structured breaks or earned choice opportunities are a critical support for many students with needs in the area of self regulation to gain skills in intrinsic motivation. The LEGO project would combine this high area of interest with a creative outlet for students' breaks. Each set would be organized into individual kits with all the supplies, directions and the image from the box. Students would be able to choose their kit and it would remain “theirs” while they work on it. Whenever a student earns their break, they continue to work on their kit until completion. Once the student finishes their kit, we will take a picture to add to our LEGO wall of Fame. It will be so exciting to watch the Wall of Fame fill up with images of students proud of their hard work. Items included in this project would allow for easy organization and storage of each LEGO kit to ensure they last for years to come. Each kit would be stored in one container along with direction; the image from the box would be safely secured to the container so students can see what they would create when choosing a new kit. These containers also ensure each students’ work stays safe as they work to complete their project. The number of LEGO kits is important to ensure we both have enough kits ready for use but to also snag the varied interests of each student. Kits range from vehicles, dragons, Star Wars, City structure, LEGO friends sets to space.
