Read aloud is an important part of building many foundational skills for young learners. It introduces vocabulary, provides modeling of how to read expressively, promotes a love of reading as well as teaches good listening skills. Read aloud is a time students can relax, sit back, and enjoy the stories being read to them. Some read-aloud books are chosen based on the interests of the students which can be more fun and light-hearted. However, many read-aloud books are purposefully chosen to help teach and raise awareness about deeper topics such as acceptance, self-awareness, and kindness. As a diverse community of learners, my students greatly benefit from seeing stories that reflect them, their culture, and their experiences in the pictures and words. When students are able to see themselves in text, they are more engaged and connecting to the text. Students are also more willing to share about their experiences, what they are thinking, and feeling. My young learners are also learning how to navigate their emotions and actions. They are still learning who they are, what boundaries to cross, and not cross. Great read-aloud opens doors to great discussions that help students to hear what their peers are going through and how they handle their own emotions much less what they can learn from the texts. These new books will be a great addition to our read-aloud time, allowing us to have deep and rich discussions about acceptance, kindness, our different experiences, and many more topics. It will help to create a more thoughtful and inclusive environment for everyone in the class!
