As a special education teacher, I see daily how executive function is an area a lot of students struggle with. The pandemic has created even more deficits in executive functioning. This has been caused by having a more relaxed learning environment at home. During the pandemic, and distance learning, school work could be completed any time of day. Students are now back in school and have to get the work done during time constraints, with peers around. This means more on demand thinking and thinking flexibility, self-regulation, prioritizing, etc. Using games for brain breaks can assist in improving all areas of executive function, while also giving students a break from the daily tasks required by curriculum standards. Board games require players to follow directions, take turns and plan strategies—three skills that may be tough for kids with executive functioning deficits. I also would like to have fidget items as options for my students. The items assist my students in their ability to focus while completing classroom assignments.
