In first grade, students are still learning with their hands. During the pandemic, touching has become something that is discouraged and my students have suffered because of that. So many amazing things about the world are studied in first grade, and this is often where students gain a love of learning. From "wear your mask" to "don't touch anything" our students have suffered through challenge after challenge. Utilizing mirrors so that they are able to ensure they are moving their mouth like the teacher when they say specific sounds (m, n, th, just to name a few). These are vital to the reading and speaking success of our young ones. Allowing students, especially young students who may struggle with abstract thought, to play with and manipulate items to help them learn is also incredibly important to their success and development. When more of the senses are invoked through learning, success rates improve dramatically, and they are able to explore in ways they have not been allowed in the past for their safety.
