Through these books, our units of Invention and Overcoming Adversity can be seen through the eyes of students from a different background and race than what is represented in our district. It gives an extended view into the perspective of others - which is really needed for middle school students. The novels will be supported by additional short stories, articles, and poems that address these themes. Students will also respond and connect their own experiences with the texts and the world through informal writing, such as journals, and in the essay writing process.
