I want my students to be able to see and represent themselves in my classroom. I want them to have materials that they feel represent their skin tones for when we do projects, like self portraits. I am asking for markers, crayons and paper for them to use. I am also asking for books to include in my classroom library that allow them window and doors into the real world of true diversity. I want to ensure that students can find books with characters that they can relate to. That may be skin color, it may be hair type, it may be similar socioeconomic situations, family makeup, and so on. I also want to provide students the opportunity to see and experience characters that are different from them, to encourage acceptance of others.
