Children need to be in classrooms where they are immersed in literacy. Their classroom libraries should be full of books that represent who they are, what they are interested in, and what they feel confident reading.
In order to shape lifelong learners, we must instill a love of reading in students at a young age. In every classroom, there are students who come from different walks of life. Some students have divorced parents, bilingual families, higher or lower socioeconomic statuses, specific emotional needs, and so many more. It is of vital importance that all students are represented in the classroom library.
Every student can love reading when they find the right book. Students need to be exposed to different books to find what they love. There shouldn't be restrictions placed on what they can and cannot read. The classroom library should be full of books that accommodate the ability levels of all students; books that challenge them and books that target their specific areas of growth. All of these books will give my students the experience of being in a classroom where they are surrounded by books that inspire a love of reading.
