Picture books provide common texts and a springboard for important but difficult discussions. Whose story is told? How is this character similar to or different from me? How can I be a better listener to their stories? How will that make me a better classmate and friend? These titles will be used as whole-group read-alouds to explore themes of identity, pride, and social justice. I have selected titles that will help my students either feel empowered and validated by being represented in some way, or help them see into the lives and perspectives of those who might have different circumstances from them. It is my hope that by using these books to help us really see ourselves and others, my students (both current and future) will grow as readers, writers, and citizens.
