For the 21/22 school year, kids across the country are returning to school in person for the first time in a year and a half. Mental health and education professionals are anticipating lots of excitement but a lot of mental health concerns, anxiety, and trauma entering the classroom. It will be crucial to support student's emotional and social needs during this return to the classroom. As a school counselor, I often utilize bibliotherapy with my students. This means that I use books and stories in the classroom, with small counseling groups, and with individual students to promote learning and self discovery. Representation is extremely important. I make sure a majority of my counseling books are centered around marginalized identities, ability, and family structure. This can be healing and empowering for many of my students.
