Having a stand-up magnetic design center will allow my students to explore letters, letter formation, recognition, and beginning/ending sounds. I plan to make this a center for my students to use during their center time. I will provide the letter of the week at the top. They can find the magnet that matches it and then use a marker to try to write it. Then I will have a sight word with that letter in it that they can make the word as well. As the year progresses, they will be able to find letters in their names, their friend's names, and words they know. With the giant magnetic early writing page, they will be able to see how we put words together to make sentences. It will be a place where I can model how to stretch words and write the letters for the sounds we hear as well as teach concepts of print like starting with a capital letter and ending with a period. My students love to mimic what they see, so having good models of writing and a place for them to recreate it is essential to their learning. Using the blends/diagraphs sorting tiles will be useful in introducing them to those concepts. Having the magnetic letters will help them practice what they learn. They love trying to find the letter of the week and learning alongside a friend or two, so having these materials will provide them with what they love. Magnatiles are a favorite building set in my classroom! They just love trying to build 3D buildings and shapes. They love exploring with the magnets and learning how to put them together to make something new. My students really do fight over them and it is one center they ask for daily!
