I am a new school social worker, working at an Alternative High School, and an Elementary school! I am very passionate about supporting students in all areas of their lives, not just academic. My biggest goal as a school social worker is to support my students towards reaching their goals, and being a successful student. I work with students from all backgrounds, and support them with a variety of needs. Social Emotional Learning is a buzz word in the world of education right now, but I have seen the impact it can have on students. Many of the items on my list are to support students with their SEL learning. For example, I have a book about Self Esteem for Teenagers on my list, and a book about controlling your emotions for elementary students. Both of those will support students at an age appropriate level. Another goal as a social worker in a school setting is to provide a safe, calm environment for students. I have a floor lamp, color changing light bulbs, a lava lamp, and snacks on my list. These items, I am hoping, will support my effort to create that space for students. The snacks- I can say from experience that the kids LOVE snacks! Not only is it a way to get kids into your office, but it is also providing access to one of their basic needs that may or may not be being met. Lastly, I have requested a Teachers Pay Teachers gift card. Teachers Pay Teachers is an amazing resource where teachers who create curriculum for their classrooms can post it on the website for others to purchase. Social workers and counselors have started using this platform to publish resources everyday.
