Our inclusive Pre-K classroom is the first special education Pre-K classroom in our school, which is very exciting! All of our classroom furniture and materials were delivered fresh and new to the school two years ago. All of our students participate in the general curriculum but since we are an inclusive classroom, our students have a wide range of needs. The general curriculum pack did not include any sensory supports for children with general or special needs. It has become clear over the past 1-2 years that our students require more sensory experiences and a calmer environment in order to fully participate in the general curriculum. Everyone knows about our five senses (Tactile ~ Sense of Touch, Visual ~ Sense of Sight, Olfactory ~ Sense of Smell, Auditory ~ Sense of Hearing, Gustatory ~ Sense of Taste), but we forget about Proprioceptive ~ Sense of Balance/ Body Awareness and Vestibular ~ Sense of Movement / Spatial Awareness. All of our students require sensory input and output including and beyond the traditional five senses. We will create a more fleshed out calm corner, incorporate fidgets in centers and circle time, move our bodies throughout the day, and maintain a calm space that does not overwhelm the senses. The items on this list will be used in the classroom to engage students in movement, increase focus and attention, create a calming environment, and build stamina, interest, and an even more inclusive community!
