I was first introduced to Slumberkins as a mom of my own two small kids. After reading some of the books I realized HEY...I could use these with my students too! Now more than ever, kids need social-emotional support. This past year has brought SO MANY changes that young kids may not be well-equipped to deal with. The Slumberkins books and stuffed animals approach social-emotional skills in a basic, easily understood way. The cuddly creatures help personify some fairly abstract concepts such as mindfullness, emotional courage, self-esteem, and self-expression. Plus they are SUPER cute! Each creature has an affirmation statement that summarizes the main skill of the book. I envision using this resource during small groups but especially 1:1 with students who are experiencing a social-emotional challenge. I think my youngest learners (aged preschool through 2nd grade) will respond best. We can read the book together as they hug their new friend :) or the student can read their book to the Slumberkin! Slumberkins also offers free online resources related to the books so I can extend these activities further. If wanted, I could print and send the online materials home with students. I envision reviewing the affirmation statement with the student weekly. There are hundreds of ways to support social emotional growth, but NONE as cute and comforting as Slumberkins! Thank you for considering my project!
