I chose most of my books with specific students in mind. Anijah is a reserved student who is very gifted and often overlooked because she is grade levels ahead in her reading and writing skills. She is always doodling fashion and hairstyles on her classwork papers and hums hopes of becoming a fashion designer. I think she would enjoy the fashion doodle book immensely. Corey is a smart, natural leader who enthusiastically delves into the stories that he can relate to and identify with. At the beginning of the school year, Corey would come to virtual class 15 minutes early and stay 15 minutes late to discuss Bud, Not Buddy with me. Bud, Not Buddy was the most relatable book for my students. It was the first book we read, and they still ask me if we can read it again. Most of the books in our curriculum are not like Bud, Not Buddy. They are not mirrors for my students, but opaque windows that don't do much for allowing my students to better understand themselves and the world around them. I dream of a library where my students can find themselves on the shelves. I want them to know that I see them and that they taught me how unique each one of them is throughout this school year. I want my library to reflect the fact that their experiences and stories belong on the bookshelf. Also, I never want to hear, "Ms. Rosner, your library books are so boring," again.
