My students are attending a Middle School with a Visual and Performing Arts focus. They are bilingual students who are living in a high poverty area of New York City. They struggle with the English language daily because their community is primarily Spanish speaking. This is a group of high energy teenagers exploring where they fit into today's society. They love computers, TV, movies and video games. They need to be encouraged to use their newly acquired ESL skills whenever possible and as naturally as possible. As teenagers they never want to look like they are struggling with anything, especially language, so they limit their conversations in English.
