While these radios will not be used directly by students, they are an invaluable piece of equipment when it comes to keeping students safe. Often times during an emergency our cellular and phone systems become overwhelmed with traffic. Two-way radios will be used to communicate with faculty, staff, and even parents during and after an emergency. According to the emergency preparedness partnership, "the foundation of communication tools in the context of emergency restoration encompasses cellular networks, broadband networks, mobile apps, push-to-talk solutions, and similar technological platforms. These tools and platforms are designed to interface with each other to enhance communication and improve the situational awareness of those in the field." With this in mind, it is very important that schools have up-to-date communication systems that can be depended upon to work. At present, our school's push-to-talk two-way radios are not up to the challenge. According to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, it is clear that feeling safe is only second to physical needs such as water, food, and shelter.
