Our second grade classroom has decided to connect our curriculum to our environment! From our classroom window, we can see five raised garden beds that need some serious TLC. After reading the story "City Green," my students asked if we could use the garden beds to build our own community garden. Funding this project not only provides materials needed to teach my students about the environment around them, it teaches them to continue to ask questions and dive deeper into their learning. We plan to use the gloves, seed starter kits, trays, and grow bulbs to start seeds, transplant maturing plants and tend to our flourishing garden. We will document plant growth in a scientific journal, write about the impact of community gardens and use math to divide the beds and collect data. This is a great way to get kids outside, learning in a hands-on way, and involved with the community.
