PreK is the beginning of many foundational skills and introducing students to quality picture books is essential. At this age, we teach students the importance of reading and to build a love for reading by reading to students on a daily bases. Exposing students to quality picture books allows students to build literacy skills, vocabulary skills and visual thinking. Teachers read 2-3 read alouds a day then place those books in the library center for students to enjoy reading independently or read with their peers. Students at the age, obviously are not reading but the picture books allows students to read the books by looking at the pictures and retelling the story, if the book has been previously read to them. Even if the students have never been read a certain picture book, students are still able to read the book by looking at the pictures and telling their own story. Sadly, many classrooms do not have quality picture books and funding is limited when it comes to purchasing books. Our curriculum are thematic base studies, which comes with limited pictures books and our students should have a variety of quality picture books for them to read.
