These materials will be used to help my students develop appropriate play and social skills, while also working on functional academics such as animals, types of transportation, food, community helpers, etc. Each quarter students will learn academics based upon that theme; for example, the first quarter learning targets will be things such as animal names, sounds animals make, and where animals live. Each center will have a lesson plan, that paraprofessionals can follow to ensure students are engaging with the materials appropriately. The centers will also help foster auditory bombardment which allow students to learn language in context. The use of play-based academics has been proven to improve communication, motor skills, social/emotional development, creativity/imagination, and critical thinking skills. I have already seen the impact that toys make on a child's growth, but I'd like it to be more systematic and data-driven in the usage of play which is what these materials will help me do! Each theme will have certain components to ensure centers are highly motivating for students, as well as cover a wide variety of skills: Occupational Therapy (Car Race Track, Threading Beads, Magnetic Maze, and Food Cutting Toy), Art (Animal Stamps, Magnet Dress Up), Sensory Bins (Animal Toys, Vehicle Toys, Little People Community Helpers), Building (Transportation Puzzle, Flower Garden, Building Blocks Tree Set, Building Playground), Technology (Learning Inno Pad, Remote Control Cars, Play Kitchen Appliances, Interactive Poster), Pretend Play (Pet Grooming, Wiggle Worms, Pretend Food), Free Play (Little People Safari, Garden Toy, Bakery Set), Games (Sneaky Squirrel, Don't Rock the Boat, Don't Break the Ice, Loopin Louie, Seasons Game, Crocodile Dentist, Pancake Pileup). The storage boxes are so that the items are easy to keep contained! Having this many options also makes play FUN and not become monotonous.
