The most tangible tool for learning music theory is the piano. Pianos are bulky and expensive, but electronic keyboards are affordable and small enough to be used in the classroom. With headphones, electronic keyboards allow students to hear themselves perform and improvise without creating a cacophony in the classroom. When young minds and young fingers are working on rhythms and melodies, a world of brain activity occurs that is only available through musical experience. Research shows that learning to play a musical instrument increases literacy, numeracy, and spatial reasoning, and significantly enhances creativity. I have used electronic keyboards in my music classroom for 18 years, and I have developed a program that gives everyone the opportunity to work and create at their own level of musicianship. They love it because they experience success and because experimenting with sound brings innate joy and balance to human beings. This school year, I will be teaching music in two schools, and my new school is in need of keyboards. I want to bring the power of pianos to my new student body, and I need your help to do it. Please consider contributing even a very small donation to my project.
