During my 7 years at Parkrose High School we have gone through the process of forecasting where students pick their classes for the following year. Every year it seems that the students desire an opportunity to have a photography program within our building. Due to many reasons: finances, lack of equipment, space, it has been difficult to develop a plan to implement this. However, this year of distance learning really has made me think of different and new ways of accomplishing high-quality learning opportunities. Since my high school experience, I have continued to grow as a photographer, doing some semi-professional work. Though I am still growing and have a lot to learn I felt a question building of, "why can't I create this class?" So, this is what I am doing. I have spoken to my old high school photo teacher and really believe we can create a solid experience for students to learn the basics of photography using both cell phones (which have fantastic cameras) and with this project, we hope to get entry-level DSLR cameras too. This class will be a learning experience for both myself and the students as we develop the class together and learn how to overcome challenges along the way to build a class we are proud of. My main goal in this is to give kids another elective to choose from which fosters creativity and builds on the notion that we should always "learn, make, repeat" in life. I hope students take advantage of the projects and see things differently from the lens of a camera. Most of all, I hope this class with these cameras can capture moments in time in which they can look back on (like I do with my high school photo work) with pride.
