Flexible seating allows children to have more responsibility for their learning. It gives students another opportunity to make their own choices on how they learn the best. During independent and partner work times they find a comfy, quiet place in the classroom to sit. Currently, my 2nd graders choose to lay on the floor, sit at an unused desk, or sit against the wall. Unfortunately, these options are not the most comfortable and result in students wanting to move around to find a more comfortable place to work. This distracts them from their learning and causes disruptions. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them and keeping students focused. Flexible seating will provide them with the comfort they crave.
My students also desire a safe, comfortable place to sit or lay and regulate their emotions and get back on task. The children in my class often need time to themselves in order to calm down and regather themselves so they can refocus on their learning. The products that I have selected will give my students the opportunity to sit in a calm and cozy spot of their choosing to take deep breaths and regain control over their feelings and emotions. In addition, the products I selected will give them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices.
