Each year, I also focus on something new to make my classroom more student-centered. Some years I’ve focused on technology integration or collaborative spaces. This year, I’ve worked to create more spaces for those students who prefer to work alone when given the opportunity. Allowing students to have movement is one important piece of student engagement, especially in the younger grades. When introducing my students to flexible seating, I will encourage them to try out each spot. I will stress the importance of self awareness. The students are responsible for finding what feels best for them and what kind of seating will make them the best learner that they can be. As students walk in my door I will say, "You may sit anywhere you like, as long as you're safe in our classroom."
