These books are a collection of primary sources, some that cannot be accessed easily in the classroom any other way. Many of my students have only heard one perspective on the past and haven't heard it in the words of the people who actually lived through our nation's past. By getting this book, my students will be able to read the very words of the people we study and the people who opposed them. The diversity of voices included is of immense value and covers the gap of most other textbook options, which have far fewer primary source voices directly from the past. By giving students these primary sources it will help them evaluate issues from multiple perspectives, engage as critical thinkers who are able to think for themselves, and it will expose them to a richness in the historical record rarely made available to many students in our country. What is more, these sources will greatly bolster students in their research and writing. Students will not only see summary articles of historical texts, but they will be able to enhance their writing with high quality sources and will learn how to evaluate such sources for bias and the merits they possess in the research and writing process.
