History is often painted as a running tale of winners and losers, in which the winners' receive the lion's share of attention and their version of events is depicted as the complete picture. No work did more to disabuse me of this fallacy than Howard Zinn's "People's History of the United States". By highlighting the stories of historically marginalized groups, Zinn opened my eyes to a larger, deeper, more complex world and its equally nuanced history. Affording young adults - especially those representing some of the very same historically overlooked groups Zinn wrote about - the opportunity to experience these realizations, would not only improve my students' reading and critical thinking skills, but empower them to tell the story of their families and communities. A classroom set of "Young's People's History" books will ensure my students have access to a rich, inclusive classroom text that will challenge their thinking and inspire them to be global citizens focused on equity and increased opportunities for all. Additionally, this book will be used as a springboard into other Zinn Education group lessons. We have already participated in a "People vs. Christopher Columbus" trial that placed Columbus, his men, the Spanish monarchy, and the system of empire on the stand for the murder of millions of indigenous peoples. We will use further readings to participate in a similar trial against Andrew Jackson for the Indian Removal Act and Trail of Tears later in the year, and will return to this text throughout the year to further develop our understanding of key developments in American history, not just through the eyes of history's "winners", but through the eyes of ALL Americans, on equal footing.
