Asking the kids to step away from the daily grind of their online learning experiences helps to break that monotony and provides a more valuable blended learning experience. We are requesting texts to make their blended learning experience that much richer. I use these texts to help prepare the kids for their Milestones state assessment test in the 9th and 11th grades. The passages in the computer platform are usually no more than 15 pages long and using "Of Mice and Men" helps with both increasing their rigor and their ability to manage reading longer texts. The modern language "Romeo and Juliet" graphic texts are for my lower-level readers. These texts allow them to read, understand, and enjoy the story itself while I give them small doses of Elizabethan language and instruct them on Shakespeare's poetic format and style. Pulling the students from their computers and having them read in reading groups or with me makes the learning experience more tangible and allows them to experience the written word in a more realistic and functional manner.
