Yesterday afternoon, I returned to my middle school in Los Angeles after over one year of being gone. I walked into the counseling office and immediately felt sad. It was dingy, cluttered and unwelcoming. The walls were covered in old, ugly posters. The entire office had giant desks and tables circa 1950 that were covered in old papers and dust. I thought of our students who would be returning to the school after a year of trauma and isolation and I realized that I needed to do something to change this space.
The students coming to the counseling office would need a calm and peaceful environment to decompress and take a deep breath. I want to create a space with nice lighting, comfortable seating , and beauty so that students and teachers can relax. I have included social emotional games and toys for the students to participate in with the counseling staff and each other. I want the students, who come into the counseling, to feel like they matter and our school community cares deeply about them and their feelings.
