Students will study the graphic novel "Long Way Down" by Jason Reynolds in literature circles (small discussion groups) where THEY lead the discussions, and ask the questions, and unknowingly ponder author's purpose, eagerly make inferences, and accidentally learn about characterization. Students will be surprised as they read this graphic novel form of poetry together, and ask "WHAT is hap-pA-ning?" in their teenaged voice inflection, and then discover poetry IS real life. This will make a difference in how they see poetry and see themselves as readers! (And non-illustrated copies for the purists!)
