We are so thankful to meet in person each school day with safety protocols in place. Unfortunately, my facemask is blocking more than droplets. As I deliver instruction each day, I feel like that teacher from the old Charlie Brown cartoons who speaks only in those “wah-wah” sounds. My mask is muffling my voice, my most important teacher tool. This is a challenge during every part of the day, but especially during reading and spelling instruction. For example, the /f/ and /th/ sounds sound the same to my students through a mask, even when I try to project my voice and exaggerate my enunciation. This presents a huge academic challenge that is solvable with your help. Your donation towards a class PA system will ensure my third graders hear every bit of instruction clearly. With a truncated school year last year and delayed start this year, my students have already missed too much valuable instructional time. They work so hard. I know I can catch them up, but that goal is near impossible when I spend so much class time repeating myself. I know this PA system will help my students this year and even in future years when I no longer have to wear a mask. Other teachers in my building have this equipment and confirm that it eliminates the speech barrier caused by the masks. They also explain that the microphone ensures that everyone in the room can hear everything they say, not just the students closest to them. It will be much easier to engage every student if every student can hear me clearly, even when I’m facing the board to write. Thank you so much for considering this project, especially during this challenging time. My amazing third-graders appreciate it, too!
