For one of my units, I would love to teach a whole novel to my class. 2 out of my 3 classes are struggling readers and writers. The average reading level in these classes is about 3-4 grade level. I want my students to also feel represented in the literature that we work on. The majority of my students are of Black and Latinx background and after a quick google survey from my students, I found out that the main reason why they don't read is that they "never read about people like them". With this book, I can keep them engaged with both the pictures and words as well as find connections between them and the characters.
