Today's high school students want relevant books: books that pull them in and demand that they become upstanders, books that show them the world around them, even though they may only be 14 years old or aren't able to drive farther than their school. Books give kid windows and mirrors—and both are key to building empathy. With a variety of books that provide windows (an opportunity to see outside their own bubbles and learn about the lives of others) and mirrors (an opportunity to finally see themselves/their story reflected in literature), the books selected here will be a launching pad to building empathy—and therefore building better humans. These books will be used in book clubs, mostly for 9th graders, so that they can read about the social issues, and dissect and digest them as a group before putting their heads together for a research project based on the issue(s) that came up in the book. In addition to supporting BIPOC authors, these books will give white suburban students windows and our students of color mirrors—and the world will benefit from a generation that learns to lean on empathy as they move through life.
