Research has shown that game playing helps with mastery of skills and knowledge. Science and social studies are often an afterthought in some classes because of the time spent on reading, writing, math, and testing. These games will expose, reteach, and enrich the students to the knowledge and skills they need to be successful in middle school. This will give my students a hands on, engaging, interactive way to learn their social studies content. I am also requesting graphic novels. Graphic novels allow for the integration of imagery in text and allow students visuals that convey a sense of time and motion. This can lead to allowing students to better understand sequencing within the book. With more images and fewer full pages of text, they are accessible to struggling readers. In fact, studies have shown that the availability of graphic novels can increase students choosing other novels that are available to them.
