Because English teachers teach in a tested subject, many times we get bogged down with focusing on helping students pass the state tests. We teach them to follow a formula INSTEAD of teaching them how to write. Kelly Gallagher's book "Write LIke This" provides fresh new ideas to use in the English classroom. According to Gallagher, if we want students to be good writers we need them to read good writing, to study good writing, and, most important, we need them to emulate good writers. In his book, Gallagher provides teachers with examples of good reading, examples of reading excerpts, examples of how to model writing in front of the students, and many examples of how the strategies can be used in the classroom. Using "Write Like This" as a focus for a book talk professional development with my English department will not only make us better English teacher, it will allow us to teach our students writing strategies to make them better writers throughout their lives.
