I breathe all things wellness and mediation. These skills were inherent but cultivated in adulthood. Growing up in Harlem NY, breathing, feelings identification, and mindfulness, were not apart of the core curriculum, let alone, extra-curricular activities. Because of this, I struggled with anxiety, as well as, difficulty processing emotions and trauma. As I began to deepen my mindfulness practice, I began to conceptualize the world through a different lens. I felt secure and able to take space in this world. Social-emotional learning is critical in developing positive relational skills and strong self-efficacy, following students to and through college. Resiliency, pro-social behaviors, and empathy are all cultivated when mindfulness is introduced at a younger age. Integrating meditation, yoga, and mindfulness on a whole school level will provide teachers, students, and staff with various tools to cope with difficult emotions, and gain awareness of the physical self with body-based modalities including breath-work and yoga. Breathe for Change will allow me to become a 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher for all ages and stages. With this certification, I intend on providing yoga, meditation, and healing workshops through the Newark and Essex County communities. I am an advocate and change agent for People of Color, this yoga and mediation training will assist me on that important journey.
