This set of ukuleles will be used to create an extracurricular group where students can learn ukulele, make new friends, and experience the musical and social-emotional benefits of playing an instrument in a group. Students have missed out on the typical band or chorus experience due to COVID-19, but a ukulele group, with instruments that are easy to clean, can be maintained through a variety of future scenarios. This group will be a new outreach program for students who may or may not be interested in traditional music education like chorus or band. My goal is to create a group that will be inclusive, informational, and fun for all students. So often adults think "I wish I had learned how to play ______." Learning the ukulele, a fairly inexpensive and accessible instrument, in a supportive community may allow students the opportunity to have a skill they can carry not only into middle and high school, but into adulthood.
