Covid-19 has dramatically changed the way students learn. In order to keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible, my district has had to pivot our learning platform several times. We have flip-flopped between fully virtual and hybrid platforms several times. Each time a change occurs, it feels like the first day of school all over again. Routines are very important in a primary classroom and students thrive when they are in a safe environment. In a few weeks, our school will be returning to 4 full days of in-person learning. Movement is essential in a second grade classroom. Children cannot be expected to sit at their desks for an entire day. They need to get up and move to keep themselves motivated and engaged in lessons. The classroom carpet has long been a favorite spot to gather and learn. We use whiteboards, clipboards, and a multitude of teaching strategies, like turn and talk to enhance lessons. Having a large carpet with "sit spots" will allow students the freedom to learn on a carpet while practicing social distancing to keep them safe.
