Educational research has proven that students learn better when they see their backgrounds, lives, and interests represented in their learning. It is important for me as a teacher to differentiate my teaching to fit each individual students' needs, and bring each students' background knowledge and interests into my lessons in order to reach them and help them learn most effectively. Since approximately half of my students are considered socioeconomically disadvantaged and cannot afford to buy the latest books whenever they come out, it is important for me to provide relevant, modern, interesting books for students to bring home with them for their at-home learning. Independent reading comprehension is a major area of focus in my teaching, since students at this grade level can sometimes lose interest in reading for pleasure, which then causes their independent reading level to fall below grade level. In educational research, the "Matthew Effect" is very prevalent, as the readers who have the most access to new, interesting books tend to read more, and thus have higher reading levels. This causes the more socioeconomically disadvantaged students to fall further and further behind in their reading. This has been exacerbated by at-home learning, where students are struggling to stay engaged in school, and have missed out on valuable learning opportunities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a first year teacher, my classroom library is full of extremely old books left over from the previous teacher in my classroom. These books are out of date, tattered, and are not relevant to students' interests or backgrounds. The vast majority of the books only feature white, male protagonists, and there is no representation of other genders, ethnicities, races, or familial structures.
