My kindergarteners, like many other children, need multi modal approaches to learning other than a traditional setting. After years of teaching, I realized that not one model fits all. Children all learn differently. I feel our classrooms need to adjust and provide space to celebrate these differences! Flexible seating is a great approach to this. Flexible seating has so many benefits! Since my class has been virtual for the year, many of my students have forgotten what it is like to be in a classroom. When they return I want them to have the opportunity to have flexible seating. Flexible seating is the practice of allowing and providing many seating options for students. This means having different types of seats like yoga balls, chairs, couches, stools, etc. This also means given students the freedom to choose where they sit. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused. I look forward to incorporating this into my classroom to provide child choice as to where they learn best!
