Our school has an outdoor classroom in our school forest. When we started using the space 10 years ago, we had to clear debris, garbage, and invasive species from the small plot of land. Students have worked hard over the years to create trails, lay woodchips, build bird houses, create signage, and control invasive species like buckthorn. Our school forest is a place to hold class surrounded by nature. Students use the space to draw, journal, and reflect. We would like to add a bird sanctuary to this space, to encourage birds to visit the area often so we can identify and enjoy their sounds when we use the outdoor classroom. We would also like to encourage zero waste cold lunches among students and staff. To promote Earth Day, our Green Team will be holding competitions with eco friendly lunch supplies as the prizes for students.
