As a classroom teacher that personally practices mindfulness and has written a mindfulness curriculum, I know how beneficial mindfulness has been for me and want to share that gift with my students. My project will allow my students to start our morning meeting with a daily mindful practice. This will be completed using stories, games, breathing exercises, yoga and mindful activities. The goal is to use the resources to set our intentions for our learning for the day, as well as use during transitions throughout the day. Mindfulness allows students the opportunity to calm the mind and get in touch with their feelings and understand that school is a safe place to learn. Incorporating mindfulness in the learning environment gives students the realization of self-development, self- expression, and body awareness. From my past experiences, when I used mindful techniques in the classroom, my students were calmer, relaxed, and more focused on their learning. By students starting their day with a mindfulness practice during our morning as well as using mindful exercises throughout the school day, they will be more in touch with their feelings and emotions. When students are more aware of their emotions, it can reduce negative behaviors, motivate them to do well in school, and be empathetic towards others. Having this project funded will provide my students tools and techniques to help focus on learning, express their feelings and to cope with adversities and challenges that they may experience at home and at school.
